ARAMARK AND CITY YEAR DONATE “A DAY OF SERVICE” TO PROVIDENCE COMMUNITY ACTION

On Saturday, June 14, 2008, Aramark, teaming up with City Year, will donate a full day of service to help renovate the recently reopened Elmwood Community Center, 155 Niagara Street, Providence, Rhode Island 02907.

Providence Community Action Program reopened the Elmwood Center in 2007 in order to provide much needed social and recreational services to the Elmwood and Washington Park neighborhoods.  The building had been closed, vacant, and neglected for several months.  Providence Community Action was able to facilitate repairs and renovations that allowed the agency to reopen the doors of the center in December 2007 and provide an emergency food pantry, adult education and ESL programs, Emergency Housing Assistance, Weatherization Services, utility assistance, youth recreation and educational services, a medical van, and case management services to neighborhood residents.  But much remains to be done.

Aramark, a leading provider in food and facility services, partnering with City Year, is demonstrating the company’s dedication to community service by donating an entire day to enhancing the physical environment of the Elmwood Community Center.

Kicking off at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, more than 200 City Year and Aramark volunteers will paint, repair, landscape, and hang murals at the Elmwood Center.

“We are very excited about this event and thankful to Aramark for recognizing the important and positive role community centers play in the lives of neighborhood residents,” said Frank Corbishley, Executive Director of Providence Community Action.  “The Elmwood Community Center is an important asset to this neighborhood and Providence Community Action, thanks to the great volunteers from Aramark and City Year, is pleased to be able to restore essential services in a beautifully renovated building.”

The volunteers will work all through the building on Niagara Street culminating in a closing ceremony with Mayor David Cicilline and members of the Providence City Council at 1:00 p.m.

IRS Gives Northeast Storms Victims until April 26 to File Tax Returns

IR-2007-92, April 18, 2007

WASHINGTON — Taxpayers affected by the major storm that hit the Northeastern United States April 16 now have until Thursday, April 26 to file their tax returns, the Internal Revenue Service said today.

Earlier this week, the IRS gave taxpayers directly impacted by the storm an additional two days beyond the April 17 deadline to meet their tax filing obligations without incurring late filing and payment penalties. After further assessment of conditions across the region affected by the April 16 storm, the IRS has decided to allow affected taxpayers an additional seven days to fulfill their tax filing obligations.

Power outages and public transportation problems made it impossible in some cases for some taxpayers and tax professionals to meet the April 17 filing deadline.

Affected taxpayers can mark their paper tax returns with the words “April 16 Storm”. Taxpayers who e-file their returns can use their software’s “disaster” feature, if available.

Additional detailed information related to this storm, including Frequently Asked Questions, is available at the IRS Web site at IRS.gov.

ProCAP and the Hurricane Katrina Express

Providence Community Action, along with the seven other Community Action Agencies in Rhode Island, collected and sorted through an avalanche of Hurricane Katrina relief supplies for approximately six weeks after the hurricane struck. The Rhode Island CAP Association received an e-mail from the CAP Associations in Louisiana and Mississippi, requesting supplies for those survivors and evacuees who were not in shelters, or who moved in with family or friends.

ProCAP, who volunteered to be the central drop-off agency for the seven other CAPs in RI, picked up truck loads of donations throughout the State.  Through a coordinated effort of ProCAP’s Board Chairman and the President of Local 251, we were able to recruit volunteer drivers and tractor trailers, etc. to assist with transporting the goods.  A total of five tractor trailer loads of donations went from Rhode Island to Louisiana and Mississippi with a total of 5,000 cases/bags or over 100,000 pounds of requested items.
