Providence Community Action, along with the seven other Community Action Agencies in Rhode Island, collected and sorted through an avalanche of Hurricane Katrina relief supplies for approximately six weeks after the hurricane struck. The Rhode Island CAP Association received an e-mail from the CAP Associations in Louisiana and Mississippi, requesting supplies for those survivors and evacuees who were not in shelters, or who moved in with family or friends.
ProCAP, who volunteered to be the central drop-off agency for the seven other CAPs in RI, picked up truck loads of donations throughout the State. Through a coordinated effort of ProCAP’s Board Chairman and the President of Local 251, we were able to recruit volunteer drivers and tractor trailers, etc. to assist with transporting the goods. A total of five tractor trailer loads of donations went from Rhode Island to Louisiana and Mississippi with a total of 5,000 cases/bags or over 100,000 pounds of requested items.
